Add a dash of Angostura green to your St Patrick’s Day

Every year Saint Patrick’s Day sneaks up on us – like so many other occasions – and although not an official public holiday in South Africa, it is largely celebrated as such with the majority of the country kitting ourselves out in green and preparing for a commemorative night out with friends and family. In fact, St. Paddy’s Day has been celebrated as far away from its origins in Ireland as the International Space Station!

This Saint Patrick’s Day (Saturday, 17 March) why not host your own low-key do and compliment the occasion with a festive green cocktail?

Apple and Ginger Mojito

Angostura’s celebrated Apple and Ginger Mojito is an elevation of a classic and a hugely enjoyable tropical refresher on sunny days.

• 3.5 tablespoons rum

• 10 mint leaves

• 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

• 1 tablespoon simple syrup (a solution of sugar in water)

• 1.5 tablespoon apple juice

• 3 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters

• Ginger beer

Method: Place rum, mint leaves, lime juice and syrup in a highball glass. Muddle mint gently to extract flavour. Add the apple juice and some crushed ice. Gently stir the drink and top up with ginger beer and Angostura aromatic bitters. It can be garnished with a Mint sprig and/ or Apple fan.

Emerald Isle

Not an Angostura original as such, but an appropriate cocktail made even more delicious with the addition of Angostura aromatic bitters.

4 tablespoons gin

1 teaspoon Butlers Peppermint liqueur

3 dashes Angostura bitters

Method: Put all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice. Stir to chill and strain the mixture into a martini glass.

Saint. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration of the anniversary death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. On this day it is customary to wear green, the colour associated with Catholics in Ireland, and to accessorise with a shamrock (clover), a three-leaved plant said to have been used by Saint Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity.

It is a day of celebration, and what better occasion to experiment with cocktail making if not the day known across the globe as the day of feasting and indulgence.
